Al Emadi Hospital hosted a two day event that shed some light on obesity awareness. The International Association for the Study of Obesity stated that 45 percent of women and 34.6 percent of men (aged 25-65) in Qatar were obese in 2003.
Visitors of Al Emadi Hospital were encouraged to participate and find out their body mass index (BMI), watch educational videos and seek professional expertise on their situation, free of charge.
Shaid Mahmoud Syed, Clinical Education Manager at Ethicon, a part of Johnson and Johnson, stated that participating will provide the patients with useful information about bariatric surgery, a procedure that is performed on patients that have struggled with obesity their whole lives, and are seeking surgery as a last attempt to lose the weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Syed vouched for the competence of Al Emadi Hospital, stating that the hospital provides a balanced pro and post surgery experience, and that the success rate of the surgery itself is very high, and that most patients have been able to 40 to 50 percent of their weight, and successfully maintain the weight loss.
