TOKYO: An earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 struck Japan's southern main island of Kyushu early Monday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. No tsunami was reported.
The temblor's epicenter was in southern Oita, one of the seven prefectures on the island, according to the agency. The focus was around 60 kilometers underground, Kyodo news agency reported.
The Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku Island, across a strait from Oita, reported no anomalies from the quake, according to Shikoku Electric Power Co. and Ehime prefectural officials.
Firefighters in Beppu, Oita Prefecture said a woman in her 70s fell from the bed at her home after the quake and sustained minor injuries in the right arm.
On the Japanese seismic scale of 7, intensity 5-upper was registered in southern Oita Prefecture, the agency said. It also marked 5 lower in western Shikoku island, which lies next to Kyushu, and in Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu. Ikata posted intensity 4.
