DOHA: Three days after an Indian was reportedly beaten up by a group of fellow countrymen for allegedly posting on Facebook comments offending Muslims, the Indian embassy here issued a brief statement saying it has urged Qatari authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the incident.
The statement said the mission is concerned about the well-being of the person and has sought “consular access” to him, not explaining what it meant.
Attempts to contact the embassy to seek a clarification on the issue failed as officials did not respond to several phone calls from this newspaper.
The embassy said it was represented at senior level at a meeting convened by a senior officer of Ministry of Interior on May 10.
The embassy, which some in the Indian community criticised for not convening a meeting of Indian organisations to discuss the issue, said participants of the May 10 meeting agreed that complaints and grievances should be brought to the attention of the authorities concerned and nobody should take any unlawful action.
