DOHA: Holding elections to choose members of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) is a pioneering experiment towards public participation that enhances democratic approach, said Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khulaifi, Speaker of the Advisory Council.
In a statement to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), Al Khulaifi hailed the democratic experiment which opened the door for women to participate alongside men as both voters and candidates, adding that this was an implementation to the provisions of Article (42) of the Constitution.
He also commended the keenness showed by the candidates during the election campaign to serve the nation and interact with citizens, saying that this was a source of strength to increase confidence in the democratic process.
He said that he was proud of this experiment which began in 1999 as a pioneering step in political process that enhances democratic approach under the wise leadership of the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Al Khulaifi extended his gratitude to previous CMC members for their achievements, whishing new members every success in fulfilling their mission in the service of their homeland and its citizens.
