Twelve Latin American and Caribbean countries will showcase their cultures in the ‘Roots’ festival to be held at the Cultural Village Foundation-Katara from April 18 to 22.
The festival will feature a host of music and dance performances and exhibitions.
This was announced at a press conference yesterday at Katara which was attended by Katara General Manager Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al-Sulaiti and representatives of various missions of the participating countries including Ecuador’s Ambassador Kabalan Abi Saab, Brazil’s Deputy Head of Mission Joao Belloc, Costa Rica’s Ambassador Luis Alberto Guillen Downing, Argentina’s Ambassador Rossana Surballe, Cuba’s Ambassador Eumelio Caballero Rodriguez, El Salvador’s Charge D' Affaires Giannina Maria Panameno Suazrez, Mexico’s Ambassador Francisco Javier Niembro Cibrian, Panama’s Charge D' Affaires Dr. Oreste Del Rio Sandoval, Paraguay’s Ambassador Angel Barchini, Peru’s Deputy Chief of Mission Ruben Espinoza Raymondi, Uruguay’s Ambassador Jorge Antonio Seré Sturzenegger, and Venezuela’s Charge D' Affaires Fatima Majzoub El-Majzoub.
Welcoming the participants, Al-Sulaiti, said, “This initiative comes in line with Katara’s efforts to open windows to diverse cultures, shedding light on the rich traditions and history of countries from across the world.”
He added, “We are confident that this lively and colorful festival will contribute in achieving the desired goals and will enhance the channels of communication between people from all walks of life, while developing in each person a deeper understanding and appreciation of the different art forms related to Latin America and the Caribbean.” The Latin American and the Caribbean ambassadors expressed their appreciation and gratitude to Katara for its efforts to host such an event aimed at bringing the rich culture and tradition of Latin America closer to Qatar.
The exhibition will be staged in building 19, and will run until the April 29, from 10am until 10pm.
Music and dance performances by Ecuadorian artists will be the key attraction at the opening of the festival. The second day of the festival will see performances by musicians and dancers from Venezuela at 7.30pm to be followed by the Argentinean performance at 8.15pm.
The rich schedule of performances include Mexico (April 20), Paraguay (April 21)and Peru and Cuba (April 22). All the performances will be staged at Katara Drama Theatre starting 7.
