James Doyle and Damysus on their way to win the Too Darn Hot Darley Stakes at Newmarket, yesterday.
Doha: Damysus (Frankel), a progressive 3-year-old colt, continued his excellent season with a determined success in the Gr.3 Too Darn Hot Darley Stakes at Newmarket, yesterday. The race, run over 1800m, brought together a field of 6, and the colt once again confirmed his upward trajectory.
Trained by John & Thady Gosden, ridden by James Doyle, and owned by Wathnan Racing, the improving colt came into this race after an impressive victory in the Listed The Aga Khan Studs Prix Nureyev at Deauville, where he won stylishly. This latest success adds a first Group win to his record.
Broke well and soon settled in fourth, in a race led by Mister Rizz (Lope De Vega), with the favourite Gladius (Night Of Thunder) tracking in second and Liberty Lane (Teofilo) upsides. As the race unfolded, Damysus maintained his position just behind the pace, with Liberty Lane moving up to challenge the leader while the tempo increased.
Over two furlongs from home, the leaders came under pressure, while Damysus was still travelling strongly and yet to be asked for an effort. Moving smoothly into contention, he joined Gladius to battle for the lead, with First Conquest (Teofilo) closing fast on the near side.
Inside the final furlong, Damysus quickened decisively to take a narrow advantage over the favourite and stayed on strongly to win by three-quarters of a length. Gladius held second, with First Conquest staying on well to take third.
Damysus is Bred by Newsells Park Stud & Merry Fox Stud.
