Doha, Qatar: City University Qatar (CUQ) to welcome academics from Ulster University to its Lusail campus tomorrow to co-deliver ‘Build Your First Game’, an interactive event workshop designed to introduce students and aspiring developers to the exciting world of game development.
The event will be delivered by Dr Victoria McCollum, Associate Dean for Partnerships and Student Recruitment, Liz Lees, International Foundation Programme Lead and Brian Coyle, Senior Lecturer in Game Design and founder of games studio Can You Eat It.
Participants will have the opportunity to design and build their first playable game through a hands-on workshop, followed by a live game-building demonstration with audience participation.
The programme will conclude with Game Night, featuring open play stations, a friendly tournament, awards presentation and a certificate ceremony celebrating participants’ achievements.
Commenting on the visit, Associate Dean for Partnerships and Student Recruitment at Ulster University, Dr Victoria McCollumsaid: “Qatar has a fast-growing gaming community and remarkable creative talent. An event like this is where a young person builds their very first game with our team beside them. Our partnership with City University Qatar means students here learn the same craft, from the same team, as their peers in the UK. We cannot wait to see what they build.”
The event will feature BSc (Hons) in Game Design and Development, the Qatar’s only digital game design, university-level programme that offers UK degree.
The skills behind digital game building such as design, coding, storytelling and teamwork, are the same exact skills tomorrow’s employers will be searching for. On Thursday, the future will start with a group of students, an empty screen and their first ever attempt in building a commercial game.
Coinciding with A-Level Results Day, the event will also offer prospective students the opportunity to meet the City University Qatar Admissions Team and receive same-evening admissions decisions across all academic programmes, making it an ideal occasion for future students to explore their higher education options.
