Doha, Qatar: Qatar and Syria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership, with discussions focusing on expanding cooperation in the political, economic and security fields, as well as supporting Syria’s ongoing reform and development efforts.

Speaking to Al Jazeera during his visit to Damascus, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs H E Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi said the visit was aimed at further enhancing the distinguished strategic relationship between Qatar and Syria.

Al Khulaifi said he held talks with Syrian President H E Ahmed Al Sharaa and Foreign Minister H E Asaad Al Shaibani on ways to deepen constructive cooperation between the two countries across a wide range of sectors.

He praised the Syrian government’s recent initiatives to advance the country’s development agenda, highlighting efforts to broaden public participation through the reactivation of the People’s Assembly, alongside judicial reform and the development of the justice system.

The Minister of State also welcomed the recent announcement on the reconstitution of Syria’s Supreme Constitutional Court, describing it as an important step that provides a solid foundation for future cooperation between Qatar and Syria.

“I believe this is a very important step, and we look forward to working with our brothers in Syria to build upon this progress,” Al Khulaifi said. He noted that discussions with Syrian officials covered numerous areas of mutual interest and reflected the broad scope of bilateral cooperation under consideration.

Al Khulaifi also congratulated Syria on regaining its full rights and privileges within the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), describing it as a significant diplomatic achievement. He noted that Qatar had supported the initiative before the organisation, which received the backing of member states.

The minister expressed hope that Qatar and Syria would work closely together, particularly through their foreign ministries, to bring the chemical weapons file to a close within the OPCW framework.

He stressed that bilateral discussions encompassed many important issues and affirmed that cooperation between the two countries would continue to expand. “The agenda is extensive, the work is ongoing, and we hope to build on these achievements over the coming years,” Al Khulaifi said.

“We take pride in the deep fraternal ties and solid relations that unite Syria and Qatar, founded on trust and mutual respect. We will continue our joint efforts to strengthen those bonds for the good of the two brotherly peoples, and to consolidate the foundations of security, stability, and prosperity in the region,” Al Khulaifi wrote on X.
