Doha, Qatar: Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, represented by the Mosques Department, conducted its third written examination for muezzin applicants of 2026, with the participation of 145 candidates, as part of its ongoing efforts to recruit qualified muezzins to serve newly opened mosques across the country and enhance the quality of religious services.
The examination forms part of the ministry’s strategy to attract candidates with the religious knowledge and vocal abilities required to perform the call to prayer in accordance with the highest Islamic and professional standards. The initiative also supports the ministry’s efforts to meet the growing demand for muezzins as the number of mosques continues to expand nationwide.
Head of the Imams, Preachers and Sharia Reciters Affairs Section at the Mosques Department Ajyan Jaber Al Ahbabi, said the examination aims to provide newly established mosques with qualified muezzins who possess a sound understanding of the Islamic rulings governing the call to prayer, in addition to appropriate vocal capabilities.
He stressed that the adhan is one of Islam’s greatest rituals and a defining feature of the mosque’s identity, noting that muezzins play a vital role in notifying Muslims of prayer times. This responsibility, he said, requires integrity, discipline, and a thorough understanding of the relevant Islamic rulings.
Al Ahbabi explained that the recruitment process begins with a written examination covering Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and Islamic creed (aqeedah). Candidates who successfully pass this stage proceed to an oral assessment in Quran recitation, ensuring that only the most qualified applicants are selected based on strict religious and professional criteria.
He said the ministry is committed to maintaining the highest standards in the performance of the adhan by recruiting highly qualified muezzins. Beyond the selection process, the ministry also provides continuous training and professional development programmes while regularly evaluating muezzins’ performance to ensure excellence in delivering this important religious duty.
The ministry conducts muezzin examinations every three months as part of an ongoing programme to meet staffing requirements for newly inaugurated mosques and ensure a steady pool of qualified personnel ready to serve mosques across Qatar.
Awqaf also continues to enhance its testing and evaluation mechanisms to improve recruitment efficiency and strengthen the selection process, contributing to the development of a highly qualified cadre of muezzins capable of fulfilling their religious and community responsibilities.
