DOHA: Action on Diabetes has partnered with Al Meera Consumer Goods Company for a second year to screen shoppers for diabetes and offer diabetics advice on healthy lifestyles and safe fasting during Ramadan.
It is putting up screening booths at three of Al Meera’s stores — Airport, Mansoura and Muraikh — for shoppers during the pre-Ramadan rush.
Staffed by nurses and educators, the booths were set up near the stores’ entrance from 4pm to 8pm on Thursday, followed by Saturday, Sunday and Monday and from 2pm to 6pm tomorrow (Friday).
Nurses and educators offer screening and provide personalised analysis of results along with recommendations on how to fast safely during Ramadan.
They are also supporting visitors by providing advice on how to reduce the risk of developing diabetes in the future and answering questions related to diabetes, healthy eating habits and exercise.
Brochures and educational information are to be distributed at each location to provide shoppers with information on diabetes, the importance of early detection and healthy lifestyle tips.
Dr Mohammed Nasser Al Qahtani, Deputy CEO, Al Meera, said, “We are delighted to team up with Action on Diabetes for a second year in a row to screen our customers and educate them on benefits of eating well and fasting safely this Ramadan and beyond.
“We’re committed to helping tackle one of Qatar’s greatest health challenges by backing the initiative.”
Herluf Nis Thomsen, Programme Manager, Action on Diabetes, said, “During Ramadan, people that choose to fast will alter their eating patterns and regular exercise routines. It is vital to maintain a balanced diet to avoid complications that may arise, particularly for those at high risk or diagnosed with diabetes.
“The earlier Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, the better the chance there of reducing the risk of developing diabetes-related complications, managing it properly and staying healthy. We encourage people to get screened for a happy, healthy Ramadan at participating Al Meera stores,” Thomsen added.
This year’s partnership is one of several education, awareness and screening programmes led by Action on Diabetes during Ramadan.
Action on Diabetes is collaborating with many leading organisations, including Hamad Medical Cooperation, Primary Healthcare Corporation and Qatar Diabetes Association to hold on events to educate patients on precautions while fasting and manage their condition and medication effectively.
