Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), in collaboration with MIT, will be hosting on Sunday a seminar on global climate change and its impact on the hydrology of the Nile and the ongoing water conflict.
The lecture, titled “Hydrology and Climate of the Nile Basin: Past, Present, and the Future”, will be delivered by Dr Elfatih Eltahir, Breene M Kerr Professor of Hydrology and Climate and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the prominent American university MIT.
Dr Eltahir a world-renowned expert in the field of the effect of climate change on the global supply of water and is currently visiting Qatar as part of a collaboration with HBKU’s College of Science and Engineering.
By reviewing the documented history of the regional climate over the Nile Basin, the lecture will delve into the role of the variations in the solar radiation in shaping regional climate over North Africa, which triggered the human migrations associated with the emergence of old pharaonic civilisation. The regional impacts of global climate change on the hydrology of the Nile will be projected based on simulations from an ensemble of global climate models. The implications of these impacts on the ongoing water conflict will also be explored.
