Doha, Qatar: The Department of Zakat Affairs of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs provided assistance worth over QR235mn to needy families in Qatar in 2023.
As many as 8,800 families benefited from the assistance.
Director of the Zakat Affairs Department, Saad bin Omran Al Kuwari said the assistance included regular and lump sum aid; tuition fees; payment of medical bills and loans for defaulters; and food baskets.
“The largest amounts disbursed by the department are [in the category of] permanent and lump sum aid which is 59.52% of the total aid, followed by school fees aid for university and school students (19.89%), and aid for loan defaulters (9.37%),” said Al Kuwari.
He said seasonal aid (charity basket) for beneficiaries registered with the Social Security Department and Zakat Affairs Department made up 8.34% of total aid.
“Paying medical bills and Zakat Al Fitr shared 8.34% and 2.03% respectively of total assistant provided by the Department to needy people last year,” said Al Kuwari.
He said the all assistance was provided to eight recipients of Zakat mentioned in the holy Quran. Al Kuwari said the Department of Zakat Affairs is the government body authorised by law to collect zakat funds and distribute it to needy people.
He said the department scrutinises and ensures the eligibility of requests for assistance submitted to benefit from zakat funds.
He assured that the amounts of zakat collected go to recipients in Qatar.
