The Ooredoo Temba Championship, organised by Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) in partnership with Ooredoo, concluded where Zekreet Team was crowned Champion after a tough 8-6 win against second place One Team. All seven members of Zekreet have secured an all-expenses paid trip to Spain to watch a highly anticipated La Liga match with the win, which was earned at AZF’s new state-of-the-art 5-a-side pitches in the Aspire Zone.
In the penultimate match for third place, Qatar Al Khairiya emerged victorious in a thrilling penalty shootout against Al Quds that ended in a draw of 11-11. Meanwhile, second and third place winners, One Team and Al-Quds respectively, received cash prizes from Aspire Zone Foundation and Ooredoo.
At the closing ceremony, Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani, Chief New Business Officer, Ooredoo Qatar, handed over championship trophy and medals to first-place winners Zekreet and commented: “We’re delighted to see the first Ooredoo Temba championship was successful. In line with our mission to support a well-rounded and healthy society, we support a host of sporting activities throughout the year and hope to collaborate with AZF again. Appreciation goes to Zekreet team for its well-deserved win and thanks to everyone who took part, whether participating or cheering on the teams.”
Nasser Abdullah Al-Hajri, Director of PR and Communications at AZF, congratulating the Zekreat team said: “I hope they enjoyed their once-in-a-lifetime prize. I’m also happy with the way the tournament was handled by our team at AZF. With over 200 participants competing on our new 5-a-side pitches, it was a challenging endeavour but has been pulled off with great success. The championship is one of many events organised by AZF to promote healthy and active lifestyles among community members and we’re happy for the support of our partners, Ooredoo, who make such events possible."
Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Neama, Chief Sales and Service Officer, Ooredoo Qatar, handed over medals to third-placed Qatar Al Khairiya while Abdullah Al-Khater, Events Manager at Aspire Zone Foundation, handed Best Player Award to Mohammed Obaidat from fourth-place team Al Quds and the Best Goalkeeper Award to Hammam Khalid from Ooredoo Team 2.
Mohammed Al Mannai, captain of Zekreet team, said: “We entered the championship to win and I’m proud of the team for achieving what we have. We always participate in AZF's activities but this competition was unique. The quality of the competition and facilities made the games all the more exciting.”
Everyone who participated in the competition, from football fans to amateurs, was impressed by tournament’s organisation and praised Aspire Zone pitches on which the matches were played. These new 5-a-side pitches contribute to improved playing conditions, thanks to their FIFA-approved artificial turf and because they are enclosed within a barrier or “cage” to prevent the ball from leaving the playing area, which keeps the game flowing.
