The award winning students
Qatar University College of Law (QU-LAWC) students won the award for Best Claimant Memorandum at the 7th Annual Vis International Commercial Arbitration Competition Middle East Pre-Moot recently held at Kuwait International Law School (KILAW).
LAWC students — Rana Mohamed Osman Al Bashir, Metha Jaber Al Jaber, Noor Ibrahim z m Mohd, Shaikha Khalid Al Kubaisi, Dima Nawar Al Sayed, Bashayer Hassan Al Ahbabi, Najlaa Hamad Al Naimi, and Noora Al Naimi — competed against 16 teams from academic institutions in the Middle East.
Leading up to the pre-moot, the students conducted research on legal issues related to a contract dispute. They developed their arguments, which they presented in front of a panel of judges and attorneys from law and civil law backgrounds.
Commenting on the students’ achievement, LAWC Dean Dr Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi said: “This demonstrates LAWC’s commitment to providing its students with a rich learning experience that enables them to achieve success during their academic journey.”
LAWC Clinical Assistant Professor and Coach Dr Aaron Richard Harmon said: “This competition provides our students with a unique opportunity to experience commercial arbitration. They gain confidence by arguing in front of legal experts and against students from law schools around the world.”
Student Rana Mohamed Osman Al Bashir said: “What I have learned in the Moot Court was invaluable. I believe that learning through such practical activities prepares us well for employers and is an important key towards future excellence.”
Student Metha Jaber Al Jaber said: “It was a great experience. We had to work very hard to do the research and write the memos. It was more challenging than anything I have done so far at the university, but it was worth the effort. I have acquired new skills that will help me as a lawyer.”
Student Noor Ibrahim z m Mohd said: “I learned how to present and defend arguments in front of an audience. In addition, it really helped me to improve my English skills. This experience was motivating and challenging.”
