Director of Doha Municipality Jamal Matar Al Nuaimi yesterday inaugurated an educational exhibition for primary school students on food safety and nutrition.
The two-day event is organised by the health monitoring section at the Municipality. Both Arabic and International schools in Qatar were invited to attend lectures and participate in a drawing contest.
“Organising such events helps to spread proper awareness and enhance artistic expression among children.”, Al Nuaimi said.
The theme of the event is "seven steps to maintain food safety" and aims at teaching children steps to prevent food-borne illnesses. The seven steps are: check, clean, cross-contamination, cook, cover, chill & cancel.
The programme focuses on increasing awareness about food products available in the market and the safe way of handling them.
The exhibition presents examples of the kitchen with a cook demonstrating the cross-contamination hazard if food is not being handled in a safe way.
Furthermore, a supermarket is featured with food and non-food items to teach kids about the importance of checking food before purchasing. Examples of fridges filled with chilled and frozen food products present correct and incorrect ways of storing food.
Pupils will be encouraged to check and assess the risk of defective products like dented, rusty and blown cans, food without expiry date or fruits and vegetables with signs of deterioration.
Calendars and colouring books will be provided to all participants and the best artworks will be rewarded with valuable prices.
Sixty to 80 schools are participate in the event and students from some six schools daily visit the event.
