Mexico City: The second annual Copa Qatar-Mexico concluded on a high note at the Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City in Mexico City. The popular event was hosted by the Embassy of Qatar in Mexico under the patronage of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy in conjunction with Qatar’s National Sport Day (NSD).
This year, 36 teams from several Ministries, municipalities within the Mexican capital, universities and other educational institutions and official bodies including the embassy team participated in a highly competitive environment.
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) team emerged champions in the men’s category while , Cuauhtémoc won the women’s title.
Coyoacán emerged victorious in the youth category.
The Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Mexico, H E Mohammed bin Jassim Al Kuwari highlighted Qatar’s presence as global sports capital, considered one of the unique countries that celebrates a sport day nationwide.
During the event which saw a large attendance of fans and journalists, Ambassador Al Kuwari praised the importance of the tournament in bringing together the Qatari and Mexican cultures through football and praised the bilateral relations between the two countries. He also added that the success of last year’s tournament was a motivation factor in organising the second edition this year.
A host of top officials and prominent sport figures, including Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Carlos Mackinlay, and the former Mexican star Manuel Negrete were also present at the occasion.
Apart from football action, the participants were able to enjoy a traditional Qatari atmosphere and taste Qatari cuisine.
“Qatar welcomes all Mexicans to the 2022 World Cup. It will be an opportunity for the Mexican people to get to know the State of Qatar closely. The 2022 World Cup will impress the world in terms of organisation and will be a unique World Cup,” H E Al Kuwari said.
