Doha: Former world number one Maria Sharapova starts her campaign at the Qatar Total Open today in the main round against one of the winners of the qualifying round at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
The Russian star participates in the tournament at the invitation of Qatar Tennis, Squash and Badminton Federation, along with three other players who have received invitation cards.
Sharapova was twice crowned the Qatar Total Open champion in 2005 and 2008. She is the only player in the tournament this year who has the opportunity to get the diamond ball provided by the Organizing Committee of the championship for the player who wins the title three times.
Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova, Jelena Ostapenko, Caroline Garcia and Angelique Kerber are also taking part in the tournament.
