Bratislava: Slovakia's government on Tuesday replaced three top officials of the national railway company after two train collisions within a month left dozens injured.

Dozens of people were injured Sunday after one train ran into another in western Slovakia.

The cause is still under investigation, but it appears one of the trains left a station despite a red light, causing an express train to crash into it from behind.

The accident followed a head-on collision of two trains in eastern Slovakia on October 13, when some 20 people were injured, which is also still under investigation.

Nationalist Prime Minister Robert Fico said Monday the leadership of the state-owned ZSR company would have to go.

"As of today, a new CEO and board chairwoman, along with two new board members, are taking office," the transport ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The three are taking over on an interim basis until new leadership is appointed, it added.

Serious train accidents in Slovakia are rare.

Last year, seven people died and five were injured when a passenger train and a bus collided at a railway crossing.

In 2009, a passenger train collided with a bus at a crossing, killing 12 people.
