Doha, Qatar: The Agricultural Affairs Sector of the Ministry of Municipality (MoM) is implementing 28 strategic projects and initiatives to boost agricultural production for ensuring food security in the country. These projects and initiatives have reached very advanced stages and most of them are near completion.
A project to develop date production system in the country has been completed 99 percent, Qatar TV has reported. 99 percent of the work to raise the sustainable productivity of vegetables and 83 percent of the initiative to increase the area of organic farming have been completed.
The report indicated that 77 percent of the agricultural support initiative, 76 percent of the initiative to raise the quality of farm production for marketing, 100 percent of the initiative to develop an annual plan for research management, and 99 percent of the initiative to conduct research to enhance agricultural production has been completed.
According to the report, 78 percent of the National Honeybee Programme has been completed. As much as 90 percent of the initiative to develop the production and marketing database for agricultural activities and 100 percent of the initiative to enhance the capacities of research stations and agricultural laboratories have been completed.
A total of 58 percent of the work to supply and install greenhouses has been completed, which is part of the project to distribute about 3,478 greenhouses to local farms. To boost agricultural production, greenhouses have been provided in an area of 666 hectares of arable land. The work to develop pastures and produce green fodders reached 99 percent.
The Agricultural Affairs Sector is also contributing to implementing five major initiatives for marketing vegetables and dates.
The said projects and initiatives were launched by the Ministry of Municipality under Qatar National Food Security Strategy 2018-2023 to increase local food production.
Qatar is developing a new Food Security Strategy 2024-30 which will focus on innovative solutions and sustainable systems to boost the agricultural sector ensuring food security in the country.
The most prominent features of the new food security strategy are the reliance on innovative solutions in agriculture and the adoption of sustainable systems.
It will also focus on improvement in market mechanisms and competitiveness of local products. There will be many projects and initiatives in the field of food security in line with the development goals of the Qatar and Qatar National Vision 2030.
Food security is a national priority for Qatar and is a testament to the great efforts made by the State in this field over the past few years.
This culminated in a strengthened position of Qatar on the global Food Security Index and occupies an advanced position in the Middle East and the World.
