New Delhi--Kapil Mishra tells Mayura Janwalkar that the controversies surrounding former AAP law ministers Somnath Bharti and Tomar does not concern him and how Delhi has the potential to be a tourist magnet like Singapore.
Are you excited about your new job as the minister for law, tourism and art and culture?
More than joy or excitement, I feel the weight of responsibility on my shoulders. I am deeply saddened by what (Jitender) Tomarji had to go through. He has been a victim of a political conspiracy.
The AAP’s law ministers, in the present and the last 49-day government, have both courted controversy. Are you concerned about that?
I don’t think the law ministry is jinxed. I have no reason to believe that and there is no evidence to suggest that either.
What have you planned to do with your ministerial portfolios?
It will be my endeavour to take Tomarji’s work forward. There is a lot of potential to develop Delhi as a tourist destination. We have a rich heritage. A country like Singapore can be the fourth largest economy driven by tourism. So there is a lot we can do in Delhi too. We will revisit the proposal to develop it as a heritage city.
With tension brewing between the Centre and the Delhi government, do you think it will be tough to get work done?
One only needs to have some patience and faith in one’s abilities. I am sure this crisis (between Centre and Delhi) will also be resolved soon.
Do you think Kejriwal should reinstate Tomar if he is found innocent?
We are all waiting for the result of his case. He has been an efficient and able leader and I hope he is cleared of all charges against him. The government will take the appropriate decision after that.
