DOHA: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently recognised the latest group of medical graduates from its Internal Medicine Residency Program (IMRP) in a ceremony held at the Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City.
A group of 32 residents, representing many nationalities, were formally recognised at the event for passing the exams and fulfilling their training requirements. More than 200 participants, including Department of Medicine’s senior leaders and programme faculty, attended the ceremony.
The four-year IMRP, which is now well-established at HMC, is considered the largest training programme for residents offered by the corporation. More than 200 graduates have completed their residency training
since 2007.
Every year, more than 300 medical graduates, seeking higher medical training and education, apply for the programme from which about 50 are placed, according to Dr Ahmed Al Mohammed, IMRP Program Director. Dr Al Mohammed is also Vice-Chair for Education and Training at the Department of Medicine as well as Senior Pulmonary Consultant in Internal Medicine at Hamad General Hospital (HGH).
“This is a rigorous residency training programme and follows a comprehensive curriculum which is continually developed to offer the best possible training to our residents. We have specified goals and objectives for each year of residency training, and residents are expected to complete a total of 12 months out of the first three years in General Medicine and then rotate between different specialties such as medical Intensive Care Unit, Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Rheumatology and others,” said Dr Al Mohammed.
“During the years of training, residents are regularly assessed and evaluated by senior faculty to ensure they attain the required competencies and the necessary clinical knowledge,” he said.
