DOHA: Texas A&M University at Qatar (Tamuq) signed with Qatar and Qatar Environment and Energy Institute (Qeeri) will soon appoint joint faculty to strengthen the existing partnership, achieve further cooperation in the areas of research and development and create initiatives in the interest of students and faculty members.
The two institutions recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
Dr Mark H Weichold, Texas A&M at Qatar dean and CEO, said:
“We are very proud of the appointment of joint faculty as it holds tremendous potential, as it enhances the capabilities of both institutions and facilitates collaboration. This appointment means a sharing of expertise and resources to build the critical mass necessary to tackle research on Qatar’s Grand Challenges. It will allow our branch campus faculty and researchers to work as chief scientists at Qeeri as we work to build capacity in the State and the region. It will also allow for the sharing of research facilities.
“Joint faculty will participate in research projects, lead research groups at QEERI, work on research proposals, industrial partnerships, conferences and other scholarly activities, as well as work in Qeeri labs and facilities.”
The agreement will also utilize the framework of the Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) Smart Grid Center in Qatar and the Qatar Sustainable Water and Energy Utilization Initiative.
Dr Mohammad Khaleel, Qeeri’s executive director, said, “The joint appointment between Qeeri and Texas A&M at Qatar is a great demonstration of Qatar Foundation’s ability to optimize resources and capitalize on the talents across QF entities to solve problems related to the national grand challenges in energy and water. Texas A&M at Qatar is a great partner and we are very proud to have joint appointments so faculty, students and scientists can work on daily basis together on projects of national impact.”
The efforts of these groups will be directed by Dr Haitham Abu-Rub, professor and chair of electrical and computer engineering programme and director of the Smart Grid Center; Dr Patrick Linke, professor and chair of chemical engineering program and Dr Ahmed Abdel-Wahab, professor of chemical engineering programme and Itochu professor of engineering programme. These joint appointments will place each of these outstanding faculty and researchers as chief scientists at Qeeri. The Peninsula
