Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria - The women's World Cup super-G in the Austrian resort of Bad Kleinkirchheim was called off after just 11 skiers had completed the course on Sunday after strong winds made conditions unsafe.

The race was initially suspended when a gust of wind blew down the finish gate but organisers later decided to abandon it altogether.

The start of the race had already been delayed twice and finally got underway 45 minutes late after organisers worked to make the piste skiable after an overnight thaw and a storm which hit the resort on Saturday.

The first skiers set off as visibility was worsening on the piste and the wind was whipping up again.

But even before work on the piste, leading competitors led by American star Lindsey Vonn and Switzerland's Lara Gut came out against the race going ahead, claiming the conditions were "too dangerous" as the snow was not deep enough.

After the first 11 skiers had completed their runs, Italy's Daniela Merighetti led with a time of 1min 9.07sec, 0.15sec faster than another Italian, Nadia Fanchini, and Germany's Veronique Hronek, 0.45sec slower.

Saturday's downhill in Bad Kleinkichheim was called off at the last minute due to poor conditions.
