QU attends World University Summer Games

Doha: A team of 17 students from Qatar University (QU) recently competed in World University Summer Games 2015 (2015 Summer Universiade) in Gwangju, South Korea. 
The team participated in lawn tennis, table tennis, fencing, shooting, athletics and swimming during the 12-day sports festival that drew 14,000 participants from 150 countries, including seven from the Arab region. 
QU tennis team members Ahmed Al Sayegh and Ali Abed Al Rida went through to the second round in the men’s singles category and Ali Abed Al Rida and Jaber Al Marri to the second round in the men’s doubles category.
Abdulla Al Shandoor Al Yafei,  Associate Vice-President, Student Life and Services, QU, was among over 40,000 attendees from around the world at the opening ceremony on July 3.
Also present were  South Korean President Park Geun-hye, International University Sports Federation (FISU) President Claude-Louis Gallien, Universiade Organising Committee co-President Kim Hwang-sik and US Ambassador to South Mark Lippert.
Al Yafei said: “Providing our students with opportunities to compete on the world stage at such high-profile university competitions shows QU’s commitment to enrich students’ university experience in which they can unlock their potential and talents and develop into individuals who will become the next leaders.”
Swimming team member Abdulaziz Ali said: “This was a valuable opportunity for us to strengthen links with our counterparts from different countries.” The Peninsula
