176 QU students honoured for 2014-15 achievements

Doha: A total of 176 distinguished students at Qatar University (QU) were celebrated in a ceremony at St Regis Hotel.
They received awards for achievements during the academic year 2014-2015. 
The ceremony was led by QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham, and included QU Vice- President for Student Affairs Dr Omar Al Ansari, vice-presidents, associate vice-presidents, deans, assistant deans, heads of departments, faculty, students and their families.
Of the 176 students, 167 were recognised in the Academic Awards category for achieving a GPA of 3.5 and above, while nine students from colleges of Arts & Sciences (CAS), Business & Economics (CBE) and Pharmacy (CPH) received Student Life Awards for accomplishments in leadership, student clubs and organisations, volunteerism and athletics.
They were  Mohammad Ahmad Al Marri (CAS), Amna Ahmad Mabrouk and Mariam Abdul Azeez Al Derham (CBE) — leadership; Tawfiq Osama Abd Elghafar (CBE) and Muna Mohamed Suleiman (CPH) — student clubs and organisations;  Zakaria Gaga and Asmaa Motab Alshmmari (CAS)  — volunteerism; and Jafar Abdulhamid (CBE) and  Sumaia Yahia Almadhoun (CAS) — athletics. 
Dr Al Derham praised students’ excellence and encouraged them to focus on their goals to achieve success. 
“Today QU must be proud of its students’ achievements which are the result of their hard work, determination and commitment to doing their very best. 
“They continue to demonstrate a strong spirit of studentship and scholarship that produce leaders, change -makers and valued members of the community. 
“We are pleased to witness the maturity and self-confidence that have served them so well in their academic life and individual interests for which they are frequently celebrated. They are the role models for those following in their footsteps.”
Dr Al Ansari said: “These distinguished young men and women are a reflection of goals and values enshrined in QU’s mission and vision and we applaud their success. We continue to engage our students in an inspiring learning experience and provide services and resources to nurture their potential and talents and prepare them for leadership responsibilities in their future endeavours.”
College of Engineering (CENG) chemical engineering student Shahd Samir Gharbia (GPA 3.96) praised constant support and encouragement from the faculty and her family for playing a core role in her achieving her goals.
LAWC student Marzooq Rashid Al Abdulla (GPA 3.73) said: “My academic experience at QU taught me how to be independent, determined and persistent and how to overcome difficulties and challenges.”
He encouraged students to be well-organised and  manage time well from the beginning of their academic journey.
