More than 100,000 people are expected to visit Katara on Tuesday to take part in over 80 National Sport Day (NSD) activities, Ahmed Al Sayed, Katara’s Deputy General Manager told The Peninsula yesterday.
Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference to announce the lineup of activities for February 14, Al Sayed, who is the chairman of Katara’s NSD organising committee, stressed Katara attaches great importance to the celebration since it started in 2012.
“National Sport Day is very important on Katara’s calendar, in fact this is the sixth year we are organising many varied activities to celebrate it. This year, there are more than 80 sports activities catering to various ages which will take place around Katara,” he said.
Katara has been a major destination during holidays and like in the previous years, organisers have prepared for the huge influx of visitors on Tuesday. “As usual, we anticipate a huge number of people to come, which is more than 100,000. Last year, the number of visitors exceeded 140,000,” he said.
In organising the activities, Katara has partnered with different institutions from all over the country.
“We were keen to engage various institutions and sport federations from the State of Qatar. More than 70 associations, federations, and institutes will be offering more than 80 sports activities,” he said.
With the theme “Show the game skills”, NSD celebrations in Katara will include activities from water games to sand and court sports and other outdoor activities.
Competitions in basketball, football, beach handball, chess, tennis and cycling will be conducted during the day, in addition to medical checkups and health tips for the public courtesy of some participating institutions.
Katara will also host a parade of stunning horses.
