ANNHRI partners with NHRCO to hold international conference in Oman in July

Doha, Qatar: The Doha-based Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) and the National Human Rights Commission of Oman (NHRCO) announced that an international conference is due to be convened in the Sultanate of Oman in July to tackle the current regional and global human rights issues.

This came during the meeting of Secretary-General of ANNHRI Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali with Chairman of the NHRCO H E Dr. Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi and his accompanying delegation at ANNHRI’s headquarters within the framework of discussing the avenues for cooperation between the two sides and capitalising on the training programs ANNHRI organises for national committees.

The meeting touched upon the ways to reinforce the mechanisms for sharing expertise and best practices to upgrade the national committees and strengthen their efforts to obtain the accreditation of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), capitalize on the expertise of legal advisors in this framework, in addition to reviewing the progression made by NHRCO within the Paris Principles, Al Jamali said.

With respect to training requirements, Al Jamali pointed out that the meeting highlighted the possibility of holding a training workshop in Oman and benefiting from the expertise of ANNHRI employees within the framework of the ANNHRI’s mission in defending human and protecting human rights through supporting Arab national human rights institutions and empowering them to discharge their duties in achieving their objective through upgrading their capabilities.

A training programme is being considered as per NHRCO’s pressing needs in the context of executing its programmes and plans within the framework of implementing the ANNHRI strategic and operational plan for independent training at the national level, Al Jamali added, emphasizing the importance of bolstering the capabilities of the employees affiliated with the Arab national human rights institutions.

Al Jamali affirmed that the training programs come within ANNHRI’s engagement in implementing a part of the programs of member institutions at the national level during 2024 and the upcoming years to further build capacities in multiple operation fields of national institutions to help them carry out their missions optimally,

in addition to propagating human rights culture through holding seminars, workshops, conferences and awareness programmes.

He underscored the significance of deepening the understanding of the nature and role of national human rights institutions, their independence criteria, cooperation tools and integration with national and global stakeholders, as well as accreditation before the Subcommittee on Accreditation (SCA) to obtain the classification of (A), emphasizing that GANHRI and SCA are currently focusing on that.

Secretary-General of ANNHRI noted the efforts ANNHRI is making to enhance and support Arab national human rights institutions and help them obtain the classification of (A), which he said comes in ANNHRI’s belief in the positive impact on the reality of national institutions and their abilities to promote and protect human rights in their countries enabling ANNHRI to move forward in its mission to achieve the objective aimed at promoting and protecting human rights in the Arab world.

He noted the significance of integration and cooperation among national and global stakeholders, alongside civil society organisations and deepened the understanding of the Paris Principles, emphasizing that such matter is imperative to amplify the effectiveness of the national human rights institutions at the local level.
