The Hague: The Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has adopted a draft resolution submitted by the State of Qatar to restore the rights and privileges of the Syrian Arab Republic within the organization.

The resolution was adopted during the 112th session of the Executive Council held in The Hague and was co-sponsored by 66 States Parties.

The adoption marks the culmination of Qatar's diplomatic efforts, following a series of consultations and initiatives that helped build broad consensus among member states, paving the way for the resolution's approval.

The decision represents a significant milestone for the OPCW, restoring Syria's rights and privileges after they were suspended under a decision adopted by the Conference of the States Parties in April 2021 over the actions of the previous Syrian regime. The move enables Syria to resume exercising its full rights and privileges as a State Party to the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The resolution also reflects the progress made by Syria in its cooperation with the OPCW and demonstrates the confidence placed in ongoing efforts to eliminate the remnants of the former regime's chemical weapons programme, thereby strengthening the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and advancing the objectives of the organization.
