Doha: Minister of Labour’s Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs Mohammed Hassan Al Obaidli said that Qatar has made great strides in implementing National Vision 2030, establishing effective integrated protection system.

Addressing plenary session of the International Labor Conference (ILC) in its 110th session, Al Obaidli underlined that Qatar has advanced greatly in implementing the National Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy aimed at developing infrastructure and economic diversification. The country has achieved sustainable development that preserves the environment, establishing an integrated, effective and sustainable social protection system.

Minister of Labour H E Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri chaired the plenary session of the International Labor Conference (ILC) in its 110th session, held in Geneva, for the seventh time in a row, in the presence of representatives of 187 ILO member states. They discussed the reports of ILO Director-General and the Chairperson along with the organisation’s financial and administrative report.

Al Obaidli said that Qatar- ILO’s technical cooperation programme has achieved remarkable successes by providing innovative and constructive practical solutions, which have contributed to bringing about change on the ground to improve the working and living conditions of foreign workers, rendering it as a trailblazing model that can be emulated in the region. Such facts reflect the essence of the Director-General’s report, which emphasised that the primary role of ILO’s activities and programmes is to promote decent work.

At the beginning of his speech, Al Obaidli congratulated the President of the Conference and his deputies on their election to pursue the activities of the 110th session of the International Labor Conference, wishing them success in their work.

“We also thank Director-General for his successful selection of the topic of this year’s report on “The Least Developed Countries: “Crisis, Structural Transformation and the Future of Work”, which is a pressing topic given the successive crises in labour field and the marked disparity in recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the least developed countries,” said Al Obaidli.

Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2022-2031 (DPoA) has been developed to support the structural transformation in these countries and advance the Decent Work Agenda by strengthening multilateral international cooperation.

The Director-General’s report also reviewed labour market conditions prevailing in the least developed countries and the most important aspects of the work programme to support the structural transformation in those countries. This is achieved through the formulation of national strategies aimed at increasing diversification and economic transformation and support efficiency and competitiveness, and the solutions that can be adopted, especially the strengthening of digital infrastructure and the adoption of modern technologies, and stimulating the transition to a green economy, while emphasising the importance of comprehensive social protection.

Al Obaidli commended the organisation’s annual report on workers in the occupied Arab territories, which reveals the extent of their conditions deterioration after the COVID-19 pandemic and the exacerbation of violations as a result of the continued occupation and expansion of settlement activity. He stressed that this requires continuing pressure on the settlers to comply with obligations in accordance with international humanitarian law.
