“They also have to achieve a minimum score of 520 on the paper-based TOEFL or equivalent test taken within 2 years of the start of the intended semester of admission, as well as a satisfactory performance in the personal interview with the Admission Committee," he added.
For the applicants to the PhD in Gulf Studies, Dr Baabood said that they should have completed the two year Qatar University MA in Gulf Studies, or a Master’s degree in a related subject, or its equivalent, from an accredited university with an accumulative GPA of 3.0. He also noted that applicants should fulfill the requisite English language standard. “The requirements are that a student earned a previous degree from an institution of higher education in a programme where English was the language of instruction, or achieved a minimum score of 520 on the paper-based TOEFL, as well as an acceptable score in the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE).
Baabood said: “The tests should be taken within two years of the start of the intended semester of admission and all applicants should achieve a satisfactory performance in the personal interview with the Admission Committee”.
He added that the PhD programme has a Qatar University only PhD or a dual award PhD with Durham University in the UK.
Students who opt for the dual award PhD will have to spend part of the time at Durham University.
Dr Baabood noted that the Gulf Studies programme is the first of its kind in the region.
“The Gulf Studies Programme (MA and PhD in Gulf Studies) aims to provide students an indepth and interdisciplinary understanding of issues related to the contemporary states of the Gulf.
"It was developed in response to a growing need among stakeholders in the region for highly qualified graduates in the field of Gulf Studies and vastly growing general interest and focus on the Gulf region”, he said.
