KINGSTOWN, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: Debutant spinner Taijul Islam completed a five-wicket haul but veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul was left unbeaten on 85 as the West Indies declared at 484 for seven before lunch on the third day of the first Test against Bangladesh in St Vincent yesterday.
Left with an hour to bat before the interval, Bangladesh reached 41 for two, losing senior opening batsman Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes.
Needing to accelerate the scoring considerably following pedestrian progress on the rain-affected second day, the West Indies batsmen displayed greater adventure, which proved beneficial for Taijul, who reaped significant rewards for his perseverance. He took three of the four wickets to fall to finish with five for 135 off 47 overs by the time the declaration came after 80 minutes’ play. Taijul began by removing obdurate opener Kraigg Brathwaite to a top-edged sweep to short fine-leg, the 21-year-old’s marathon innings of 212 coming to an end after 554 minutes at the crease. AFP
