Tripoli: Ousted Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi's son Seif al-Islam remains behind bars, despite reports he had benefitted from a general amnesty, authorities in the town where he is detained said Friday.

Seif al-Islam "is still in prison and will not be released despite contradictory remarks" in the media about his whereabouts, the authorities in Zintan, a town southwest of Tripoli that opposes the unity government based in the capital, said.

A statement on their Facebook page said the fate of Kadhafi's son, who was captured by Zintan militias in November 2011 after the country's revolution, would be determined through "judicial process and by preserving the rights of the (Libyan) people and of the accused".

Lawyers for Seif al-Islam, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity, have said he was released under an amnesty announced last year by the rival Libyan administration based in the east of the country.

He was sentenced to death last year by a court in Tripoli for his role in the violent suppression of the anti-Kadhafi revolt, which has been followed by five years of violence and political chaos.

In June, 12 Libyans were gunned down in Tripoli after their release from jail for taking part in acts of repression in 2011.
