Roads design, traffic manuals launched

DOHA: The Ministry of Transport launched Qatar Roads Design and Traffic Control manuals in a ceremony at Doha Sheraton Hotel yesterday.
Minister of Transport H E Jassim Seif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, Minister of Finance H E Ali Sherif Al Emadi and officials from transport and communications departments were present.
The Qatar Traffic Control Manual (QTCM) establishes guidelines and principles for designs and application of traffic control devices, including traffic signs, road markings and signals, placed on, over or adjacent to a public roadway to regulate, warn, or guide traffic on that particular facility.
Al Sulaiti said Qatar is witnessing unprecedented economic growth and has made progress in various fields in accordance with the vision of Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. 
He stressed that a competent transportation sector is a cornerstone for economic development and economic growth cannot be achieved without an integrated and efficient transport system. 
The Ministry of Transport has embarked on developing a plan to promote the transport sector to become the main pillar that supports economic, commercial and industrial development, he said. The update of both manuals is one of measures to ensure the use of standardised designs in roadway design projects. 
The project has taking into account strengths and shortcomings of existing manuals, reviewed regional and international standards and updated the manuals to meet the needs of a rapidly developing Qatar.
The manuals provide guidance for designers and users when delivering highways projects, taking into account lessons learned from design projects and highway operations.
Both manuals are being updated, taking into account latest developments in technology and global best practice. 
Residents and visitors will benefit from consistent standards for road and highway infrastructure. The manuals will also help improve road safety by providing motorists with signage, delineation and road markings by improving visibility and consistency of signs along with improvements in local access arrangements.
