DOHA: The Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently organised a workshop for diabetic children dependent on insulin pump, at Bayt Al Diyafah in Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City.
Maya Eitani, a dietician at HMC, gave a lecture about controlling glucose level through the use of the pump, which discharges insulin doses based on the patient’s starch (carbohydrate) intake.
The pump is a medical device used for the administration of insulin in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
Participating patients and their families and caregivers were divided into groups and they learnt about counting starches and discussed their findings at the end of group sessions.
Zainab Abdulla Al Mohammadi, Coordinator, Paediatrics Department’s newly introduced Diabetes Support Programme, said the workshop aimed to raise awareness and improve the knowledge of children with diabetes, and their families, about childhood diabetes and how to prevent complications related to diabetes.
She said the workshop also aimed to educate young patients about how to manage their condition by adopting a healthy lifestyle and provided social and psychological support as they exchanged information and shared experiences.
The workshop, which featured recreational and cultural activities, was organised in conjunction with the Health Awareness and Volunteering Programmes at HMC, Eid Bin Mohamed Social Centre and the Small Volunteers’ Programme, an initiative of Qatar Volunteers Centre.
