GCC Women’s Games open in Oman today

Muscat: Love and peace' will form the main theme as the fourth edition of the GCC Women's Games are set to be inaugurated with a colourful opening ceremony at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (SQSC) on Sunday night, reported a local daily.

Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shaibani, the Minister of Education, will officially declare the 11-day Games open at around 8 p.m. at the main indoor stadium of the SQSC in the presence of Sheikha Naeema Al Sabah, head of the GCC Women's Sports Organising Committee and chairperson of the Kuwait Women's Sports Committee.

A number of dignitaries from Oman and four other participating nations — Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain, will also grace the proceedings. 

The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin with a welcome address by Oman Women's Sports Committee chief and vice-chairperson of the Games Organising Committee Sayyida Sana bint Hamad Al Busaidy.

That will be followed by a cultural programme with love and peace as main theme and a parade of the participating teams. Then Omani athlete and Olympian Buthaina Al Yaqoobi will take oath on behalf all GCC athletes, after which chief guest Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shaibani will officially declare the Games open.
