Qatar University (QU) is set to mark the National Sport Day coming Tuesday with several events including a paragliding show by a team from QU Air Sports Club, officials said yesterday.
Besides taking part in sporting events, participants will also have the opportunity to get free testing of body composition, vital capacity, upper body strength, lower body power, core body muscular endurance, and agility.
This year QU will mark the National Sport Day in collaboration with Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), Community College of Qatar (CCQ) and Katara Cultural Village (Katara).
QU will hold activities at the Katara, in line with the Emiri decision for the National Sport Day to be observed on the second Tuesday in February every year.
The event will feature sports booths by QU coaches, faculty and students, and a health booth and healthy nutrition corner by members from the Physiotherapy and Sport Injury Unit at QU Student Activities Department in conjunction with QU College of Medicine and Sport Science Program. Visitors at the booths will be briefed on importance of physical workout in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Moreover, beach soccer and beach volleyball championships, physical fitness and sports training sessions, and sports activities for adults and kids, as well as a paragliding show by a team from QU Air Sports Club will be held as part of the activities.
“QU highlights the importance of this national occasion by promoting collaboration among community members. QU students will contribute to this event as organisers, coaches and participants. By engaging our students in national and social events such as the National Sports Day, we fulfill our goal to graduate successful leaders,” said QU Student Services and Activities Director, speaking at a press conference yesterday.
Lieutenant Nasser Al Jaber of Lekhwiya, Talal Al Mawlawi, CCQ’s Head of Student Activities Department, and Nasser Al Dosari, a representative from Ministry of Municipality and Environment were also present at the press conference.
“The National Sport Day underlines importance of exercise for building a healthy community. This is our sixth participation in the National Sport Day and we are proud to collaborate with QU in raising community awareness on importance of sports for maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” said Al Jaber.
Al Mawlawi said, “We would like to thank QU for collaborating with CCQ for the second year to organise this important event. CCQ invites students and their families to participate in many traditional games and we hope they will have an enjoyable experience.”
“The National Sport Day aligns with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 to establish a healthy community," said Al Dosari.
"We are proud of Qatar’s pioneering initiative to celebrate annually the National Sports Day, held on second Tuesday of February with the aim to promote a sporting and healthy lifestyle,” he added.
