Manila: A Philippine air force helicopter crashed on Saturday while on a medical evacuation mission in a southern province, injuring nine people on board, the military said.
The UH-1D chopper was about to land when it was buffeted by strong winds, causing it to crash in Malapatan town in Sarangani province, 1,068 kilometres south of Manila.
The chopper was on its way to pick up five army troopers wounded in a clash with communist rebels in the area, said Lieutenant General Aurelio Balabad, a regional military commander.
Another aircraft was dispatched to evacuate the wounded soldiers from the fighting and the crash, he added.
