Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, represented by its Department of Islamic Affairs, has issued a new critically edited edition of “Al-Musnad al-Mustakhraj ‘ala Sahih al-Imam Muslim,” one of the prominent works produced in service of Imam Muslim’s Sahih.
The work, authored by renowned hadith scholar Imam Abu Nu’aym Ahmad bin Abdullah Al-Asbahani (d. 430 AH), has been critically edited by Dr. Saleh Abdulrafe’ Abdulshafi and published in an eight-volume edition as part of the ministry’s continuing efforts to preserve Islamic scholarly heritage, revive important classical works and provide reliable academic references for researchers, scholars and students of Islamic sciences.
The publication represents a continuation of the ministry’s efforts to publish authoritative scholarly works and critically edit major Islamic sources according to rigorous academic standards.
It also contributes to Qatar’s growing role in supporting scholarly and cultural projects with lasting intellectual impact.
Al-Musnad al-Mustakhraj ‘ala Sahih al-Imam Muslim is considered one of the best-known mustakhraj works related to Sahih Muslim. In the book, Abu Nu’aym Al-Asbahani presents the hadiths contained in Sahih Muslim through chains of transmission that converge with Imam Muslim’s chains at the level of his teacher or higher in the chain.
The work also highlights differences that occur in the wording and texts of various narrations, providing researchers with valuable material for studying the transmission and authentication of hadith.
The publication represents an important example of the mustakhraj methodology in hadith scholarship. By presenting different routes of transmission and varied chains of narration, it offers additional insight into the methods used by early hadith scholars in verification, transmission and critical analysis.
The new edition has been prepared as a comprehensive critical edition, based on comparison with advanced and carefully preserved manuscript copies.
The editorial work includes careful verification of the text, documentation and sourcing of Prophetic hadiths, explanation of unfamiliar terminology and the preparation of comprehensive scholarly and technical indexes. These features are intended to facilitate researchers’ access to the book’s subjects and contents.
The publication consists of eight volumes, including the introductory material and indexes.
It also underwent detailed scholarly review and comprehensive proofreading by the Publications and Islamic Works Section of the Department of Islamic Affairs to ensure textual accuracy and maintain high academic and publishing standards.
The ministry said the publication reflects its broader efforts to promote Islamic knowledge and support scholarly writing, research and critical editing.
Its publishing programme covers specialised works in the Quranic sciences, Sunnah, Islamic creed, jurisprudence and Islamic heritage, providing reliable sources for researchers, academics and students of Islamic studies both inside and outside Qatar.
The ministry continues to select works that provide significant scholarly value to the Islamic library and seeks to publish them according to high academic and technical standards, enabling their use by universities, research centres, academic institutions and specialised libraries.
The ministry said the new publication is available to holders of postgraduate degrees in hadith and its sciences, universities, cultural institutions and public libraries
