Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has opened five new mosques with a total capacity of 2,860 worshippers in Freej bin Abdul Aziz, Al Wajbah, Abu Hamour, Al Gharrafa and Onaiza.
Houses of Imams (prayer leaders) and muazin (callers for prayers) are also annexed with the new mosques. The new mosques are part of a plan of the Ministry to increase the number of mosques to accommodate more worshippers and to keep pace with the growing population of the country. The mosques are being built keeping in mind the population of the area.
The newly opened mosque No 153 in Freej bin Abdul Aziz has a main hall for prayer with a capacity of 611 male worshippers. Another hall dedicated to women can accommodate 431 worshippers. The mezzanine floor can house 180 worshippers. The new mosque in Al Wajba, No 274, also has two separate prayer halls with a capacity of 230 male worshipers and 40 female worshippers. Mosque No 684, which opened in Abu Hamour, can accommodate 300 men and 60 women for prayers.
At least 224 male worshipers can pray in the new mosque No 801 opened in Al Gharrafa. As many as 297 male and 70 female worshippers can perform their prayers in congregation in the newly opened mosque No 278 in Onaiza.
