Singapore--A Singaporean athlete at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games is in hospital with serious injuries after a motorcycle crash which also killed his brother, reports said on Sunday.
Sepaktakraw player Muhammad Azreen Sairudin, 25, and his 21-year-old brother who was riding pillion, were involved in a collision on a highway in the early hours of Sunday.
"PERSES shares the family's grief over the loss of their son in the accident and the serious injuries suffered by the player," the Singapore Sepaktakraw Federation (PERSES) said in a statement, according to Channel News Asia.
Reports said Azreen had been in line to play Singapore's matches against Indonesia and Thailand on Monday at the regional multi-sport event. Sepaktakraw is a form of volleyball played with the feet.
It was the second tragedy to overshadow the Games on Sunday after news that at least eight Singaporeans, including six schoolchildren, died in Friday's earthquake at Malaysia's Mount Kinabalu.
SEA Games venues will hold a minute's silence before competition and government buildings will lower flags to half-mast on Monday, which has been declared a day of national remembrance.
