Washington: Donald Trump won a coveted primary election in the southern state of Louisiana Saturday, locking up more crucial delegates in his quest to win the Republican presidential nomination.

US Senator Ted Cruz struck first in Saturday's handful of presidential nomination contests, decisively winning Kansas and Maine.

However, the brash billionaire -- the frontrunner in the race -- prevailed in the Bayou state thwarting a concerted effort from Republican party elders to slow his advance toward the White House nomination.

Early projections showed Trump with a healthy lead in the night's other election contest, a primary in the state of Kentucky.
