DOHA: Nestlé, producers of Maggi noodles, said yesterday that all Maggi products sold in the Middle East are safe for consumption and compliant with “highest quality standards”.
Nestle has run into a controversy in India, after several Indian states, including Delhi, have taken Maggi noodles off the shelves claiming it contains elevated levels of lead.
“We are continuously engaging with authorities in our region and thank them for their active collaboration.
“Quality and food safety are our top priority and we perform regular tests on our raw materials and finished products to ensure food safety and full compliance,” Nestle said in a statement yesterday.
In a separate link ‘Maggi noodles in India: Your questions answered’ the company claimed “all Maggi noodle products in India and elsewhere are absolutely safe for consumption.
“We understand that consumers are concerned by reports that state authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi have found elevated levels of lead in a sample pack of Maggi Masala Noodles. We are cooperating with authorities and engaging with them to clarify the situation.
“The sample tested in Uttar Pradesh came from a batch that had an expiry date of November 2014 and is no longer in the market.
“We are now working with regulators in Delhi to understand results of their tests. We are sharing our test results, which show Maggi Noodles to be completely safe, explaining our testing methodologies and trying to understand the discrepancy between their test results and ours,” said the company.
Enquiries in the market yesterday revealed that the controversy in India didn’t have a noticeable impact on the sale of Maggi noodles in Qatar until now.
“It is too early to assess the situation. There could be an impact when more people come to know about the controversy,” said official of a leading hypermarket.
He added that Maggi noodles sold in Qatar are not sourced from India. The Peninsula
