QRCS provides emergency shelter aid for flood victims in Sudan

Doha, Qatar: As part of its multi-sector response to the floods in Sudan, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has initiated the distribution of shelter tents to affected families in River Nile, North Kordofan, and White Nile States, with 866 family tents delivered, out of a total of 1,066 tents to be distributed under this component of the project.

The delivery event was attended by Dr. Nawara Abu Mohamed Taher, Member of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), H E Mohamed bin Ibrahim Al-Sada, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Sudan, Mohamed Omar Mukhier, Vice-President of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS); Dr. Salah Al-Din Daak, head of QRCS’s representation office in Sudan, and representatives of the recipient states.

In her remarks, Dr. Taher expressed appreciation of the Sudanese government for the continued support provided by the State of Qatar. She promised that the Sudanese authorities would help overcome all obstacles, to ensure the swift delivery of aid to the victims in the affected areas.

Al-Sada emphasised Qatar’s nonstop support for Sudan across various humanitarian and development sectors. He praised the strong bilateral relations and partnership between the two nations.

Dr. Daak explained that the distributed tents were allocated according to the emergency needs plan issued by Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC). He noted that the distribution process would be carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Social Development and under the direct supervision of QRCS, to ensure that the humanitarian aid would reach out to the families in need, up to to the highest standards.

Representatives of the target states gave a briefing on the action plan for distributing the tents directly to the affected families, using an approved beneficiary lists developed based on the situation in each state, and in full coordination with the competent authorities.

This intervention comes at a time when thousands of Sudanese families have lost their homes and property due to the flash floods. Family tents represent a key urgent need, to provide a safe makeshift shelter for affected families until the conditions become stable and more sustainable housing solutions are in place.

Regarding the shelter projects that QRCS intends to implement during 2026, Mohamed Bader Al-Sada, Assistant Secretary-General for Relief and International Development at QRCS, explained, “This year, we plan to implement 12 shelter projects for the benefit of 90,900 people in eight countries (Gaza, Yemen, Syria, Sudan, Niger, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Lebanon), at a total cost of QR 29,365,000. Last year, we implemented a total of 20 shelter projects in Bangladesh, Syria, Somalia, Niger, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Gaza. The total cost and number of beneficiaries were QR 96,792,926 and 589,113 respectively.”
