Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has outlined safety reminders for the public when encountering stray dogs.
In a series of infographics shared on social media, the Ministry highlighted important behavioral cues to better understand the body language of stray dogs and to ensure safety.
It stated that stray dogs may approach people out of curiosity or in search of food. They do not attack people unless they feel fear or a sense of threat from the person. These dogs also instinctively act to defend their territory or puppies.
When encountering stray dogs, a person must immediately halt and stay still without screaming or making sudden movements. It is advised to avoid running away from the dog, as that triggers the chase instinct of the animal. If possible, place a barrier between the person and the dog, such as placing a bag in front of you or getting behind a vehicle or a tree. Slowly back away until you exit the area safely.
In case of an attack, the public should use any available means to protect themselves without turning their back on the dog.
To entirely prevent encounters with stray dogs, the public is advised to avoid passing through places where dogs are present, especially at night.
The public must also avoid feeding stray dogs regularly in the same place to prevent the dogs from considering that area as part of their territory.
It is also advised to steer away from places where the puppies are kept, and most importantly, people should avoid making direct eye contact with the dog, as that is considered a challenge to it.
If bitten by a dog, the public is advised to immediately go to the nearest health center or hospital to receive the rabies vaccine. Citizens and residents must not neglect the wound even if it appears to be minor.
"Remember that acting quickly can save your life," the Ministry underlined.
To report stray dogs, the public can call 2346555 to inform the Police Canine Section at the Criminal Evidence and Information Department.
