DOHA: As specialty coffee shops continue to spread across Qatar’s commercial and residential districts, their role is extending beyond food and beverages. They are becoming flexible spaces where work, learning and social interaction overlap, offering a more informal setting for the country’s young and emerging professional communities to connect and collaborate.

The cafe culture is rapidly expanding, with coffee shops evolving from places for a quick drink into active community hubs for young professionals, creatives and students.

Across Doha’s walkable commercial districts, the daily coffee routine is increasingly becoming a social and collaborative experience. From West Walk, Old Doha Port and Lusail to neighbourhood cafes across Doha, independent venues are hosting book clubs, writing circles, workshops and other community-driven initiatives.

Tables once used mainly for casual dining are now doubling as spaces for reading, discussion and collaboration, reflecting growing demand for accessible venues where people can connect around shared interests.

The trend is also being driven by changing work habits and a preference for flexible social environments. Cafes in areas such as Old Doha Port and West Bay are increasingly functioning as informal offices and meeting rooms, with professionals spending hours working from laptops while others use the same spaces for study or creative projects.

For community organisers, the relaxed atmosphere of a coffee shop offers an alternative to more formal venues.

“Coffee shops provide a very casual setting,” speaking to The Peninsula, the founder of Her Book Circle book club, Sayagul Myrzakhanova said. “Discussing different topics and books over a cup of coffee warms our hearts, fosters friendship, and builds trust among members.”

The openness of such venues can also help groups attract new members. Unlike private meeting rooms, gatherings in cafes naturally expose discussions to other customers, sometimes turning curiosity into participation.

“Whenever we have a book discussion, people nearby lift their heads, become curious, and eventually approach us to ask questions and join,” Sayagul said. She added that these informal encounters help bring together people with a shared interest in reading, exploration and critical thinking.

However, choosing the right venue requires more than simply finding a place with enough tables. Low noise levels, accommodating staff, flexible seating arrangements and locations that remain relatively quiet during evening hours are increasingly important considerations when planning group sessions.

Aisha Husen, who leads the She Reads book club, noted that venue selection goes beyond simple seating arrangements.

"It depends on staffing, noise levels, and overall atmosphere, you tend to have much more of an intimate vibe when it's a cafe that's not crowded." she said. "Once you become regulars, staff save your preferred table and put your sessions in their calendar."

The shift extends beyond organised groups. At specialty coffee shops, the communal tables are often occupied during the afternoon by customers working on laptops, studying from notebooks or listening through noise-cancelling headphones.

For students, the ambient activity of a cafe can provide a useful alternative to more traditional study spaces.

“Libraries can feel so claustrophobic,” said a local university student. “Sitting in a coffee shop gives me the right amount of background noise and energy to study without feeling suffocated.”

The interior and atmosphere of modern cafes are central to their appeal. Quiet corners, communal tables and laptop-friendly seating allow young professionals and students to work independently, while larger open areas provide room for discussions and collaborative activities.

For some customers, the presence of community groups adds to rather than detracts from the experience.

Asked whether book club gatherings interfere with studying, the student said, “Not really. I don’t mind the background noise. They are never intolerable or anything, and sometimes I like listening in. It’s quite fun.”
