DOHA: Qatar’s Red Crescent (QRC) has distributed foodstuff to 700 quake-affected families in two of 68 worst-hit villages of Nepal. The two villages, like many others, are cut off from the rest of Nepal as access roads are fully or partly destroyed. Due to this reason, the villagers were not able to buy food.
In one village, Qatar’s Red Crescent distributed food stocks to 300 families. Each family was handed 35 kg of food items to last a fortnight. In another village in Nuwakot district, 400 families were given away food packets. A total of 11 tons of food was distributed to the 700 families.
The beneficiaries lauded the effort of Qatar’s Red Crescent and said the help was timely as they were not able to visit the cities for shopping essentials. Moreover, in the cities in the quake-affected areas shops are still closed due to fears that earthquake may strike again, QNA reports. The QRC which is in Nepal with a rescue and relief team has carried with it 240 tonnes of relief materials, some 130 tons of which consist of food stocks.
The charitable body has collected all the food stock from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and has stored it in a warehouse so that the stocks can be accessed whenever needed for distribution to the needy. QNA said that five of the 68 affected villages are worst hit and two of them are destroyed 80 percent.
In the village where the QRC distributed food to 300 families, the destruction is 95 percent and some 1,500 people are left injured, 50 of them critically. Among the 50 are old men, women and children, QNA said quoting the QRC, which is collecting through donations in Qatar QR12m for relief work in Nepal where 12 regions are severely hit by quake.
