Doha, Qatar: Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services has reaffirmed that its “Al-Gharimeen” (debtors) Project aims to relieve financially distressed individuals burdened by debt due to circumstances beyond their control, such as job loss, sudden health or social crises, or financial losses in business ventures.
The foundation stated that the project was launched from a deep humanitarian and social commitment to protect individuals from falling into cycles of poverty and imprisonment, and to prevent financial hardship from escalating into a social crisis that undermines personal dignity and family stability.
According to the foundation, the initiative targets individuals who are unable to meet their financial obligations due to emergency circumstances or severe living pressures and who have had court judgments issued against them, not as a result of extravagance or negligence.
Beneficiaries include those who have lost their jobs, suffered unexpected illnesses, or encountered sudden financial setbacks. The project also supports families of imprisoned debtors who have lost their primary breadwinner and are left struggling to meet daily living expenses, making them particularly vulnerable to psychological and social stress.
The foundation explained that the Al-Gharimeen Project addresses the crisis at its roots by directly settling outstanding debts for eligible cases. This approach relieves legal and psychological pressures on beneficiaries and offers them the opportunity for a fresh start.
Support extends to prisoners’ families through assistance with rent, essential living expenses, and children’s education, in addition to psychological and social support, based on the belief that financial stability is closely tied to emotional and family well-being.
It emphasised that the project operates under clear and rigorous mechanisms to ensure fairness and transparency in selecting beneficiaries. All cases undergo comprehensive financial, social, and legal assessments by specialized committees in accordance with approved criteria.
The initiative is also subject to regular monitoring and evaluation to strengthen governance, ensure aid reaches those genuinely in need, and maintain public trust in institutional charitable work.
The foundation noted that the project plays a direct role in protecting families from disintegration by preventing the imprisonment of debtors in financial cases or mitigating the impact of imprisonment on their families, particularly children.
It also helps preserve family dignity, reduce the psychological and social effects of financial crises, and foster a sense of security and stability, contributing positively to social cohesion and a more compassionate community.
The foundation called on members of the community and philanthropists to support the Al-Gharimeen Project, stressing that helping one distressed individual may mean saving an entire family from collapse.
