Doha, Qatar: The Government Communications Office (GCO) shared key facts on frequently asked questions regarding the country's air defence systems.
GCO has outlined the points below.

Have you recently heard unusually loud sounds?
Most likely, these are the sounds of air defence systems intercepting and destroying missiles within the airspace.

What causes these sounds?
These loud sounds occur as a result of missile interception systems operating successfully at high altitude as part of precautionary measures to protect public safety.
Intercepting missiles generates a strong pressure wave, similar to what is known as a "sonic boom."

What about the vibrations that accompany the loud sounds?
The vibrations are caused by the detonation of intercepted missiles. This generates a strong pressure wave that passes over buildings and surfaces such as glass or walls. These brief vibrations are often felt more noticeably in high-rise buildings; however, they do not indicate impact at ground level.

Why do these sounds seem close and intense?
After interception occurs, sound waves travel downward toward lower atmospheric layers and buildings. This is influenced by a phenomenon known as sound reflection. In the absence of barriers in the sky to disperse the sound, echoes can intensify, making the sound appear amplified and closer than it actually is.

What should we do when we hear these sounds?
Do not take risks by going outside or approaching the area to film. Remain inside homes, buildings, and safe locations. Stay away from windows and exposed areas. Never approach debris or fragments, as they are dangerous and potentially lethal. In these circumstances, as in all others, it is essential to obtain information only from official and trusted channels.
