Doha: Young Egyptian activist Mohand Ehab died in New York, where he was getting treatment for leukaemia. He was 20-year old.
The young activist and photographer was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2015.
Ehab's was in detention during Arab Spring protests. According to social media he was initially misdiagnosed while in detention. Later when his father got a lab test done outside the prison he was diagnosed correctly.
Ehab was arrested in 2013 when he was only 17 years old, under the charges of 'photographing a protest' in Alexandria, and he was initially sentenced to five years in prison but received a lighter sentence of three months, Cairoscene reported.
In January 2015 he was once again arrested. During this detention, his health deteriorated.
Authorities granted him a release to be treated in the United States, but Ehab wrote on social media that his condition is not getting better and asked everyone to pray for him, Cairoscene added.
