Doha, Qatar: Qatar has achieved a new international scientific milestone, with student Ethan Joel P Nepomuceno from the Philippine School, representing the Qatari team, winning the bronze medal at the 37th edition of the International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2026), held in Vilnius, Republic of Lithuania, from July 12 to 19, 2026.
The competition witnessed strong participation, with more than 300 male and female students representing over 80 countries from around the world. Participants underwent complex theoretical and practical examinations covering various fields of biology as part of the prestigious global competition, which is considered the oldest and largest international Olympiad for secondary school students.
The event serves as a global platform for discovering scientific talents, promoting academic excellence, and facilitating the exchange of scientific and cultural experiences among participating delegations.
The achievement was the result of an intensive training programme supervised by the Biology Section of the Educational Guidance Department at the Educational Affairs Sector of the Ministry, in collaboration with Qatar University and Qatar Science and Technology Secondary School. The team underwent several qualifying stages under the guidance of highly qualified local trainers, with a focus on developing students’ scientific thinking skills and their practical and theoretical analytical abilities.
This accomplishment adds to Qatar’s growing record of successes in international scientific Olympiads and highlights the country’s advanced standing in global scientific forums.
It also reflects the significant attention Qatar places on identifying talented students, nurturing their abilities, and investing in human capital, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
